Halfway Point (Besa)

I didn’t even realize this week marked the halfway point until beginning to write this post, but as I look back on it, my cards aligned for an important week of reflection, as I had opportunities to have a handful of one-on-one meetings with supervisors I truly respect. I also spent time thinking through some challenges and personal questions I’ve been having about my future career and my value as a job candidate.

Last night, I was discussing with a mentor some of the things I’ve been thinking about and noticing at Besa, and comparing them to past work experiences I’ve had (not in a negative way). They pointed out, to my delight, how much they have already noticed me grow this summer and the valuable learning that has taken place.

Specifically, this week I met with my supervisors for project updates and check-ins, where I presented some of my thinking and research on new volunteer experiences and engagement strategies. I am grateful for the initial feedback and look forward to continuing to develop these ideas over the next few weeks—especially around improving volunteer experiences as a whole, exploring new ideas, connecting with new nonprofits, strengthening engagement strategies, and furthering data analysis.

I also had the opportunity to assist the Franklin County Office on Aging in delivering box fans to homebound seniors during this heat wave. I was able to see neighborhoods I wouldn’t usually go into, interact directly with people from different backgrounds, and reflect on why some of what I was seeing is the way it is during a later supervision session with my social work supervisor from the City Attorney’s Office. We discussed theories, policy, new ideas, and future applications. It was a very meaningful conversation for me.

Lastly, I have begun researching nonprofits I am interested in meeting with one-on-one and preparing questions that will support my learning and takeaways this summer. I am grateful for the autonomy in this project at Besa and am excited for these conversations—I think I will gain a lot of insight.

I leave this week feeling grateful for this opportunity to gain exposure to the nonprofit sector, how different organizations operate, how organizational culture is developed and carried out, different leadership styles and traits, and the incredible thinkers and changemakers in the Columbus area. All the while, I have also had a list of intentional people supporting me, having my back, and wanting the best for my learning and time.
